A larger middle class and formal sector, more NGOs, and more women in professional life are among the positive changes. Yet the country also faces serious challenges including high inequality, persistent poverty, and rising crime. Lancaster argues that the United States should look beyond a narrow focus on drugs and migration in its relations with a country teetering on the brink of failure or success.
