The impacts of climate change will increasingly require communities to either invest heavily in adaptation, or leave their homes. Planned relocation processes, however, are complex and require significant resources to succeed. A recent analysis of financing for planned relocation showed that many gaps and challenges remain. This issue is becoming ever more urgent: new policies will need to be developed and financing will need to be mobilised. Given the current context of shrinking fiscal space and reduced aid availability, financing from multilateral development banks is likely to become increasingly important.
This public event is co-hosted by the Center for Global Development in partnership with the Asian Development Bank, the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, the Platform on Disaster Displacement and the Coalition on Dignified Climate Relocation. It will bring together global experts and practitioners on planned relocation to assess financing sources and mechanisms, identify remaining policy and research gaps, and discuss challenges, good practices and the role of development finance in advancing planned relocation. It will also include the opportunity to preview a virtual reality experience, giving insight into life in a community with no option but to undertake a planned relocation. Narrated by Mark Ruffalo, this will be a preview of a VR experience to be formally launched at the Venice International Film Festival.
