Washington, DC—The Center for Global Development (CGD)’s Board of Directors has elected Dr. Mohamed A. El-Erian, a world-renowned economist and former chief executive of PIMCO, as Chair of its Board of Directors. He will take up the role on June 18.
Over his career, El-Erian has garnered experience across international financial institutions, global financial markets, and academia. He has held senior roles in the private sector, currently serving as Chief Economic Advisor at Allianz—the parent company of PIMCO—and Chair of Gramercy Fund Management and Under Armour.
Early in his career, El-Erian spent 15 years at the International Monetary Fund, rising to the position of Deputy Director, and served as Chair of President Obama’s Global Development Council.
He is a regular commentator on global economic issues, including as a contributing editor at the Financial Times, and the author of award-winning, best-selling books on the global economy and financial crises, helping make complex issues accessible to a wider audience.
El-Erian was previously President of Queens’ College, Cambridge, and is currently the René Kerns Professor of Practice at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
CGD’s President, Rachel Glennerster, commented: “I have long admired Mohamed El-Erian’s economic analysis and ability to explain the complexities of a fast-changing global economy.
“That kind of clear, independent thinking is exactly what CGD seeks to deliver, and his insights will be invaluable to us.”
Upon accepting the role of Chair of the Board of Directors, Mohamed El-Erian commented:
“CGD has established itself at the vital intersection of rigorous analytical inquiry and actionable policy.
“I am honored to join as Board Chair, especially at a juncture when the global economy’s structural and cyclical pressures are increasingly jeopardizing gains in global development. In this fluid global environment, CGD’s mission to contribute to favorable outcomes has never been more important.”
El-Erian succeeds Debra Fine, who served as Interim Board Chair during the search process. Fine will resume her role as Board Vice Chair.
