Stefano Paternostro recently served as acting regional director for human development in South Asia at The World Bank and is adjunct professor of economics at University College Dublin. At the World Bank, he also held senior leadership positions in the Social Protection and Jobs Global Practice across South Asia and Western and Central Africa.
Over a nearly three-decade career at the World Bank, Paternostro worked on social protection, poverty reduction, labor markets, fiscal policy, and human development across Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, and South Asia. He previously served as lead economist in Morocco and Madagascar and has extensive experience on the distributional impacts of economic reforms, public spending, inequality, and poverty dynamics.
His research has been published in journals including World Development, The World Bank Economic Review, Economics of Transition, and Economics of Education Review. He holds a PhD in economics from Cornell University.
