The MCC will soon sign a five-year, $350.7 million compact with Malawi that focuses soley on activities that aim to revitalize Malawi’s power sector. By reducing power outages and technical losses, enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of hydropower generation, and improving service to electricity consumers, the compact intends to reduce energy costs to enterprises and households; improve productivity in the agriculture, manufacturing and services sectors; and support the preservation and creation of employment opportunities in the economy.
MCA Status
On September 23, 2005 Malawi signed a three-year, $20.9 million threshold program agreement aimed at improving the legislative and judicial branches, providing support for lead anti-corruption agencies, strengthening independent media coverage, and expanding and intensifying the work of civil society organizations. The program concluded on September 30, 2008. An independent impact evaluation was undertaken on Malawi's threshold program to assess its outcomes. Access the full report here.

In the FY2011 selection process, Malawi passed all six Ruling Justly indicators, three of five Investing in People indicators, and four of six Economic Freedom indicators. Malawi is a low income country (LIC).
