On May 18-19, CGD co-hosted a meeting with the African Monitor spearheaded by the Most Reverend Archbishop Njonkongulu Ndungane. Policymakers and researchers from across the African continent convened to discuss the role of African governments and civil society in motivating more and better impact evaluation of development programs. Participants were favorable to the report’s analysis and its call for improving impact evaluation work, but offered suggestions that included reducing a focus on random assignment; emphasizing the need for balanced and integrated evaluation responding to stakeholder needs; and clarifying and improving the incentives for collaborating on a collective initiative.
