William F. Maloney held the positions of Chief Economist for the Latin America and the Caribbean region, Chief Economist for Equitable Growth, Finance and Institutions, and Lead Economist in the Development Economics Research Group at the World Bank. Prior to the Bank, he was an assistant professor of Economics at the University of Illinois, Urbana. From 2011 to 2014 he was visiting professor at the University of the Andes and worked closely with the Colombian government on innovation and firm upgrading issues.
His academic research spans international trade and finance, developing country labor markets, innovation and growth, and industrial policy, and he has written numerous flagship publications including most recently Reclaiming the Lost Century of Growth: Building Learning Economies in Latin America and the Caribbean and Rationalizing Informality: Social Protection, Job Quality and Growth. He directed the eight volume World Bank Productivity Project, and was instrumental in creating the Bank’s program in Government Analytics.
Mr. Maloney received his PhD in economics from the University of California Berkeley (1990), his BA from Harvard University (1981), and he studied at the University of the Andes in Bogota, Colombia (1982–83).
