Congressional testimony on climate change

In recent congressional testimony, I urged policymakers to focus U.S. foreign assistance on human and economic development to buttress vulnerable societies against the inevitable impacts of climate change. Kaci Farrell, CGD’s new outreach and policy assistant, reports on the hearing in "Development is Key to Climate Change Resilience, Wheeler says in Congressional Testimony".

Climate negotiations not all bad news

Nancy Birdsall and Jan Von Der Goltz highlight often-overlooked agreements between developing and developed countries in climate negotiations in "Climate Disagreement Makes Headlines during Clinton’s Asia Trip—But the Good News Should Be Part of the Story, Too".

UK development white paper emphasizes common challenges

UK Minister for International Development Douglas Alexander presented a new white paper at a CGD roundtable discussion last week. The report encourages adaptation investments to help developing counties confront climate change. Lawrence MacDonald summarizes the event in "UK Poverty Action Plan Discussed at CGD Roundtable (Now, if only the United States…)".

My thanks to Kaci Farrell for her help in preparing this letter.

Best wishes,

Democratic Republic of Congo

The World Bank recently announced that it will buy 500,000 tons of carbon credits from a reforestation project in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This will be the first project in the DRC to benefit from global trade in emission reductions under the U.N.’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) scheme.
