The Center for Global Development Announces New Vice Presidents

WASHINGTON — The Center for Global Development (CGD) has today announced the appointment of Markus Goldstein and Clemence Landers as Vice Presidents and Senior Fellows. They join Rachel Glennerster, President of CGD, in leading the Washington- and London-based think tank, ensuring the organization delivers impactful research that shapes better development policy and practice by the world’s top decision-makers.

Markus Goldstein, an accomplished economist with extensive experience in research and policy, joins CGD from Amazon. Previously, Markus was Lead Economist at the World Bank, where he founded and led the Africa Gender Innovation Lab. His work informed policies across 56 countries and influenced over $10 billion in development investments. His expertise spans poverty reduction, gender equity, firm growth, and agricultural productivity, making him a pivotal addition to CGD’s leadership team.

“I’m delighted to join CGD, a place known for bold ideas and real impact. At a time when the world faces urgent and complex challenges, I’m eager to help drive forward innovative, evidence-based solutions that make a difference,” said Goldstein.

Clemence Landers, currently a Senior Policy Fellow at CGD, has been instrumental in advancing the organization’s efforts since joining the organization in 2019. A recognized expert on the World Bank’s International Development Association, Clemence has also been instrumental in efforts to make financing more affordable for low-income countries, and brings extensive experience in shaping US policy, including her work focusing on the US Development Finance Corporation. Clemence’s deep expertise and strategic vision have driven significant advancements in CGD’s research and policy initiatives.

Landers commented: “It has been a privilege to help shape CGD’s work over the past few years. CGD is at its best when it’s challenging assumptions and offering new perspectives. I’m looking forward to working with Rachel and Markus to continue this approach, deepening our impact in this next chapter.”

Of the new appointments, Rachel Glennerster, President of CGD, noted: “Markus and Clemence each have a remarkable ability to inspire and drive change. In these turbulent times, that’s exactly what CGD needs to better engage decision-makers with new, innovative ideas and bridge the gap between rigorous research and real-world impact. Their leadership will be a huge asset to CGD at this pivotal moment in global development.”
