CGD Welcomes Dany Bahar as New Director of Migration, Displacement, and Humanitarian Policy

I am pleased to share that Dany Bahar will join CGD today as a senior fellow and as director of our migration, displacement, and humanitarian policy program, based in our Washington, DC office. Dany is an accomplished economist on a range of issues, and has already contributed impactful research on US border crossings and refugee integration as a non-resident fellow at CGD.

Dany is well-placed to continue CGD’s influential work on migration, displacement, and humanitarian policy program. His research sits at the intersection of international economics and economic development. He has explored the ways migrants and refugees drive the process of knowledge diffusion across and within borders, a key component of economic growth. He has also worked more broadly on gains from migration, and on integration policies of immigrants and refugees in local economies. His work has been published in top academic journals in economics and business, and his writing and analysis about policy has appeared in a range of media outlets around the globe.

He will complement existing CGD expertise on topics related to productivity, structural transformation and industrial policy, international trade and investment, and innovation and entrepreneurship.

“At a time when nations around the world struggle to balance economic needs with political realities, crises force migrants to pursue new opportunities, and as climate change continues to remake our world, Dany’s leadership and research combined with our team's existing expertise will make important contributions to these daunting challenges and ensure CGD stays at the forefront of the overlap between migration and development.” -Incoming CGD President Rachel Glennerster

Dany’s work ahead will focus on policies that leverage on the role migration can play in economic development, the disruptions on labor markets given the demographic transition of fast aging populations in developed nations, and the urgent need for more skilled workers for an effective energy transition to deal with climate change. He also is interested in how innovation and fast adoption of new technologies—such as artificial intelligence—will impact productivity, economic growth, and inequality worldwide.

Dany is coming from Brown University where he has served in its faculty as an associate professor of the practice of international and public affairs at Brown University’s Watson Institute. Bahar will remain in the faculty of Brown as a senior fellow at the Watson Institute and a visiting associate professor of the Economics Department. He is also a senior fellow at the Harvard Growth Lab, and is affiliated with CESifo Group Munich and the IZA Institute of Labor Economics. In the past he was a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution where he remains as a non-resident affiliate. He has also worked at the Inter-American Development Bank in the innovation division and at its research department, and has consulted for several organizations, including the World Bank.

Everyone at CGD welcomes Dany to our organization and looks forward to having him as a colleague.
