Noted economist Arnold "Al" Harberger provided insights on Latin America drawing from his recent visits to Colombia, Paraguay, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. Peter Hakim, President, Inter-American Dialogue and John Williamson, Senior Fellow, Peterson Institute for International Economics served as discussant and Dennis de Tray, Vice President for Special Initiatives, Center for Global Development, moderated the event.
Harberger, father of the "Chicago Boys," a group of University of Chicago-trained Latin American economists, has been working with Latin American governments for four decades. He is a leading advocate for private sector-led economic growth and business-friendly investment climates. Harberger has also been a strong voice for the need for rigorous project cost-benefit analysis as an input into developing countries' public investment strategies.
