In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for robust governance and sustainable financing mechanisms for pandemic preparedness and response has never been more urgent. The multilateral response has so far been underpinned by a new Pandemic Fund, hosted by the World Bank. The pandemic agreement, which could provide a multilateral framework for action to facilitate prevention, preparedness, and response to new infectious disease emergencies, is currently in the final phase of negotiations. But the difficulties of these negotiations demonstrate the complexity of the elements at stake.

This in-person seminar will convene an array of experts to discuss the governance and financing of initiatives relating to pandemic preparedness and response. In particular, the event will focus on the roles of the European Union and the United States.

This event is co-hosted by the Spanish Embassy in Washington D.C., the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), and the Center for Global Development (CGD).
