Shortly after being elected at the end of 2016, Ghanaian President Akufo-Addo declared: “Ghana that will free itself from a mindset of dependence, of charity, of aid and handouts. Ghana…is going to mobilise its own resources to develop and confront its own problems.” This goal has been the economic rallying cry during Akufo-Addo’s administration and is beginning to echo through sub-Saharan Africa.
In an event jointly sponsored by the Milken Institute and the Center for Global Development, Ken Ofori-Atta will talk about the Ghanaian experience in trying to move beyond aid and the lessons for other African countries and their development partners. Having recently managed a successful exit from IMF support for the government’s economic program, he will give his vision as to how governments can bring about economic transformation that generates growth and jobs and reduces poverty.
In addition to being Minister for Finance of Ghana, Mr. Ofori-Atta is also the Chairman of the World Bank Development Committee for the next two years and the head of the African Caucus. These rarely combined roles give him a unique vantage point to envisage a new future for Ghana and Africa.
